Neighbor appreciates new Blount shelter

Dear Editor:
I am a volunteer at the Loudon County Animal shelter, and a member of the Four Paws Food Pantry, a group that provides pet food to families in crisis through the Good Samaritan Center in Lenoir City. I am thrilled that Blount County has opened the Blount County Animal Center. The front-page article in the Sunday paper was inspiring.
I have one issue, however. The fact that the Blount County Humane Society does not support the county charging a license fee to support the center because it isn't a "no kill" shelter is myopic. In fact, all animal shelters are, in the end, kill shelters. The no-kills become overcrowded and the overflow goes to the kill shelters. It's as simple as that.
There are simply too many dogs and cats to be responsibly cared for. It is a sad, sad state that we live in. We have too many dogs and cats, and therefore they aren't valued. People still refuse to have their pets spayed and neutered for a variety of fabricated reasons. Believe me, your dog will still hunt, and your female will only get fat if you overfeed her. And, if your children want to experience the miracle of birth, watch a video.
Please support this wonderful new facility by adopting a shelter animal, and by spaying and neutering your pets.
