Maryville Planning Commission recommends raising elevation for construction in flood plain

Maryville Planning Commission is recommending that construction in the city's flood plain areas be increased from one to two feet.
New construction in a flood hazard area would have to be built at least two feet above the base flood elevation. An estimated 70 vacant lots in the city are located in a flood hazard area.
According to a staff memo, this would dramatically reduce the risk of flooding in new structures and have a beneficial impact on flood insurance rates for property owners.
Maryville City Council, the final authority on changing city ordinances, will now consider the recommendation.
