Because of the demand for services, the Blount County Animal Center is adjusting its operating hours.

"After two full weeks in operation, I am very pleased with the functioning of the new animal shelter facility," said County Mayor Jerry Cunningham. "I remain concerned about being so short staffed at the shelter. It has become increasingly apparent to me that we must adjust the hours the shelter is open in order to allow our limited staff time to address housekeeping and other matters."

The new hours for the shelter are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The shelter will be closed from noon to 1 p.m. for lunch each day. Questions can be directed to the Blount County Mayor's office at 273-5700.

The shelter is located at 241 Currie Ave., Maryville. The phone number is 980-6244. Stray animals will be held at the shelter for a minimum of three days. Pets with tags will be held five days to give the owners a chance to claim them.
