Some parents would have to take students to school or to the nearest bus stop under a new bus service policy approved unanimously Tuesday by Alcoa school board.

Alcoa Director of Schools Tom Shamblin told board members that several bus drivers had apprised him of dangerous, inaccessible areas on their routes. Shamblin said he spoke with a Tennessee Organization of School Superintendents attorney and was advised officials could provide bus transportation from the nearest approved stop.

The proposed policy: "Alcoa City Schools will provide bus transportation only to students who reside within the city limits of Alcoa. In the event that a student resides in a location that has been determined to be unsafe, or inaccessible for making a stop with the bus, then the parent/guardian will be responsible for transporting the student(s) to the school or to the nearest stop approved by the bus contractor and the director of schools."
