LENOIR CITY -- Traffic on U.S. Highway 321 across Fort Loudoun Dam will be restricted to one lane at night except on weekends beginning Sunday, while TVA crews raise the elevation of the dam.
The lane will be closed from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday through Thursday for the duration of the project, about two weeks. All lanes of U.S. 321 will be open during daylight hours and Fridays and Saturdays. No work is scheduled for Thanksgiving Day.
TVA is placing sand baskets on top of the dam as part of a project to raise the elevation of four dams to help reduce the risk of flooding in the unlikely event of weather more extreme than any conditions ever recorded in the region. The extra height would prevent water from overtopping and damaging the earthen embankments.
