After a slow start, Maryville College got 21 points in the paint from Greg Hernandez and defeated Webster University, 84-70, in the second of two basketball games Saturday that opened the first annual James C. Campbell Memorial Tournament.
The Scots (3-0) were playing their third game in seven days and showed the effects of some fatigue, coach Randy Lambert said, especially in a first half during which MC missed some opportunities to gather momentum offensively and had 14 turnovers.
Hernandez's 21 points came mostly in the second half, starting with the initial basket and adding to a turnaround barrage that ballooned the Scots' 34-30 halftime lead to 12 points and then 14. Webster had no answer except at the free-throw line after fouls became abundant at both ends of the court.
Down by double-digits, the Gorloks were then in the unenviable position of trying to defend Hernandez inside and contend with MC's 3-point shooters on the perimeter. It didn't help matters that the Scots went to the line 23 times and hit 20 free throws.
Eventually, Maryville increased its advantage to 21 points, 79-58, on two free throws from Dustin Brown at the 3:28 mark.
