A Carpenters Middle School student has been charged with delinquency by aggravated assault following an incident in which he allegedly pulled a pellet gun out of his pants and pointed it at a bus driver.
A 60-year-old female bus driver reported at 3:10 p.m. Nov. 18 that she was dropping off students at an apartment complex on Seals Crossing Way, according to a Blount County Sheriff's Office report.
The bus driver said when the last student at that stop got off the bus, he allegedly reached behind his back, pulled a pellet gun out of his pants and pointed it at her. The woman reported she then screamed, shut the bus door and drove off.
Children were still on the bus at the time of this incident, the report said.
The bus driver later called John Webb, who is Carpenters Middle School's assistant principal. Webb told her he was aware of the situation and had talked with the boy's mother, the report said.
The boy's mother told Webb the situation had been resolved. Several students at the bus stop told an apartment custodian about the incident, and the custodian removed the weapon from the boy, the report said.
The student was recently expelled from Carpenters Middle School, the report said. When contacted by The Daily Times, Principal Mike Crabtree said he could not comment on the incident.
Dr. Jane Morton, the system's supervisor of grades 6-12, said it was her understanding that the student had not been expelled. Officials may take further action, she said.
The student is currently detained in the Blount County Juvenile Detention Center, said Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Marian O'Briant.
