The speed limit on a section of Broadway Avenue in the downtown Maryville is dropping from 30 to 25 miles per hour.
Maryville City Council passed a resolution Tuesday night lowering the speed limit on Broadway between Cates and New streets.
"A speed survey was done and it showed 25 (mph) is the optimum speed down there," said Maryville Director of Engineering and Public Works Angie Luckie.
A work order is expected to be issued today for the new signs and they should be up in a couple of weeks, Luckie said. "The new speed limit won't be enforced until the signs are installed," she said.
Luckie explained that the city was approached by citizens and the police department about clarifying the speed limit downtown.
Only the short stretch between Cates and New streets will change, but the city will be installing more signs clarifying where the speed limit changes from 30 to 40 mph going in and out of the city.
The speed limit from Cates south on Broadway in front of Maryville Municipal Center is 30 miles per hour, it's 30 mph in the Washington Street corridor and returns to 40 mph at the railroad bridge on East Broadway.
The speed limits on Harper and Church avenues remain 30 mph.
