COOKEVILLE -- The Alcoa Tornadoes showed no signs of surrendering their unprecedented BlueCross Bowl reign on Friday, garnering a sixth straight state title with a 21-0 win over Milan.
The shutout put an exclaimation point on Alcoa's first perfect season since 2000, and it gave coach Gary Rankin his eighth state trophy, four in a row at Alcoa following his tenure at Riverdale.
Gatorade player of the year Jaron Toney scored all three touchdowns in the contest and was named the game's offensive MVP for the second year in a row. Toney led Alcoa with 134 yards on 27 carries and his three TDs raised his state record rushing total to 50.
Milan, which was also unbeaten coming into the contest, outrushed Alcoa, but turnovers gave Alcoa enough scoring opportunties for the defense to make its stand. Dee Herbert was named the defensive MVP, collecting 13 tackles.
