The Maryville College men's basketball team got the fire back on Monday.
The Scots knocked out NAIA-member Milligan College inside Boydson Baird Gymnasium, blowing out the Buffaloes, 94-73, just two weeks after dropping a two-point decision in Johnson City.
Greg Hernandez scored 10 of his game-high 16 points at the free-throw line. The Scots hammered it inside from the opening tip, finishing 27-of-33 from the line. Maryville (18-4) ripped off runs of 8-0, 12-0, and 17-2 in the first half, with many of those points coming at the stripe.
Eryk Watson had 16 points of his own, including a perfect 5-for-5 on free throws, for MC. Wes Lambert added 13 points and Milton Stanley had 11.
Cordero Seymour led Milligan (9-16) with 16 points.
MC coach Randy Lambert gave nine different players double-digit minutes, using a platoon system he'd talked about implementing last week. Maryville's second unit picked up where Watson and Hernandez left off, bringing an up-tempo style that led to easy buckets at the rack for Stanley and a fast-break dunk for Brandon McGill.
Lambert said he hopes he's found a solution to the herky-jerky flow his team exhibited in consecutive losses to Milligan and Piedmont. With the second unit coming in at once, Maryville has been able to maintain momentum at a time when the Scots NCAA tournament hopes depend on the perennial Pool B invitees not skipping a beat.
