The Maryville College men’s basketball team made its third consecutive first-round exit from the NCAA Division III tournament Friday night with an 88-67 loss to 24th-ranked John Carroll University at Guilford College’s Ragan-Brown Field House in Greensboro, N.C.
The Scots (23-5) fell behind by 15 points before halftime and never recovered, failing to slow down the consistently efficient offense that carried the Blue Streaks (21-6).
John Carroll shot 60 percent in the first half and 55.2 percent for the game. MC hit only 36.1 percent of its shots and went 2-for-17 on 3-pointers.
Eryk Watson led the Scots with 15 points, going 3-of-10 from the floor and 8-of-10 on free throws. Greg Hernandez finished with 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting and seven rebounds, and Jared Laverdiere added 10 points off the bench.
Maryville’s other three starters -- Jordan Damron, Wes Lambert and Ben Williamson -- combined for only 10 points and 2-for-15 shooting. Williamson was held scoreless but had a team-high nine rebounds.
