Blount County Register of Deeds Phyllis Crisp is once again warning local residents about a scam involving a third-party business charging for copies of their deeds.

The scam has been a regular occurrence for several years, with the name and location of the business behind it often changing.

Residents should use caution if they receive a letter from a California-based company offering to provide a property profile and a copy of the associated deed for $83. The company sending out the letters is Record Transfer Services, 3835 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., Suite 78, Westlake Village, Calif., 91362.

The Register of Deeds office only charges 50 cents per page to print those documents or $1 per page for a certified copy. The letter soliciting the charge can be misleading, Crisp said.
