Orvis Milner, former Vol and area golfing great passed away Tuesday at the age of 90. Milner played for General Robert R. Neyland on the gridiron in 1946 and 1947 after serving in the Navy during World War II. He was a starting blocking back on the 1946 team, which finished 9-2-0 en route to winning the Southeastern Conference, playing in the Orange Bowl, and finishing seventh in the nation.
According to his obituary, his hitting style was renowned and described by one local writer in 1946 with, “I don’t think there was a single tackle that Milner was not involved in. When he hits, you can hear the boom in Maryville.”
