Asbury Place in Maryville is set to open its newest assisted living memory care residence.

The new facility, The Beech, is located on the Asbury Place campus at 2648 Sevierville Road. The first residents will begin moving into The Beech in a few days, a spokeswoman said.

The Beech reflects a growing trend on how providers engage with people who have dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. According to a news release, caregivers work to bring forth positive memories and reduce frustration by working with family members to understand each resident’s background.

Activities are structured to coincide with that resident’s interests to recall positive memories. Caregivers respond to where a resident feels they are at that moment, rather than seeking to reorient them, according to the release.

In another trend in senior care, The Beech is designed to mirror a private home rather than the traditional nursing model of rooms along a hall. In the household model, residents are encouraged to gather in the living room or kitchen with caregivers who are trained to work in a multidisciplinary fashion.
