Dr. Robert Proffitt has written a book, “A Family Physician’s Journey: And Diversions Along the Way,” about some of his fondest and most unusual encounters in more than 50 years as a family physician in Maryville.

He originally was inspired to record some of his memories for family and friends; as he wrote, he realized the stories about people ranging from famous athletes to medical icons might be of interest to others, too," according to a press release form the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine.

The book also covers his residency on VCU's Richmond campus and his time with the U.S. Army Medical Corps as a physician for the American Embassy in Seoul, South Korea.
