A 12-year-old girl being treated after nearly drowning Wednesday at Peery’s Mill Dam in Walland died Thursday, the Blount County Sheriff’s Office said.

Dispatchers received reports of an injured person around 4 p.m. Wednesday, BCSO spokeswoman Marian O’Briant said.

First responders attempted to revive Alexis Shirley at the scene before she was taken first to Blount Memorial Hospital and then to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead early Thursday.

A preliminary autopsy showed the death was caused by drowning.

BCSO is continuing to investigate but warns residents to use caution and obey safety signs when swimming this summer in local pools and parks.

A Maryville resident, Ty Christopher Berry, died one year ago today at Peers Mill, according to BCSO.

A Blount Special Operations Response Team member was injured four months later while rescuing another man who was trapped at the top of the dam.
