The Blount County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with county Parks and Recreation to host an informational meeting that will focus on scams targeting senior citizens, Sheriff James Lee Berrong said Thursday in a press release.

The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 6, from 11 a.m. to noon at Everett Senior Center, 702 Burchfield St., Maryville.

The meeting will be led by a Sheriff’s Office investigator who will focus on phone, mail and internet scams that target senior citizens. Presenters will offer tips to protect personal and financial information and address methods of dealing with suspicious phone calls.

The Sheriff’s Office has received reports of phone and internet scams for several years. Some of the most popular are IRS scams and individuals who claim to be sheriff’s or police officials. Educating citizens about these dangerous scams is the best way to combat the problem, the release states.
