Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials said today that the dead man whose body was discovered Monday near Laurel Creek Road has been identified as David J. Carver, 64, of Blount County.

Carver was found in an off-trail area between Townsend and Cades Cove, and the "cause of death and activity at time of death are under investigation," the park said in a press release.

The Knox Country Regional Forensic Center positively identified Carver through a comparison of medical records, and an autopsy is being performed. No additional details are available at this time, the park said.
