Four females were the finalists in the 5th Annual Amazing Maryville High School Shake last week, with Carmela Lewis named the winner.

Clara McKinnis took second place, with Eliza Conner and Hadley Baerns the other finalists from a field that started with 32 students Thursday night.

Based on the Amazing Shake competition from the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, the event led at MHS by English teacher Penny Ferguson hones students’ professional skills, from shaking hands to delivering persuasive speeches.

During Friday’s final round at MHS, the girls were interviewed by state Sen. Art Swann; state Rep. Bob Ramsey; Judd Conatser, operations manager at Downtown Island Airport; and Jennie Verner, senior director of government affairs and policy for the University of Memphis.
