A woman arrested on a DUI charge Friday was found asleep at the wheel outside a Maryville gas station after defecating and urinating in her vehicle.
Cherie Laverne Denton, 51, Wilkinson Pike, Maryville, was arrested by Maryville Police officers on a charge of DUI. She was released on $1,500 bond pending a 9 a.m. June 9 hearing in Blount County General Sessions Court.
Denton’s interaction with police came Friday at around 6:23 p.m. after an off-duty Maryville Police officer noticed her slumped over the wheel of her 2005 Ford Explorer outside the Citgo gas station, 913 Montvale Road, Maryville.
Denton had slurred speech and appeared to be impaired, according to a Maryville Police report. She also told officers she had drank alcohol and had taken her prescribed medication, the report said.
When she stepped out of her vehicle, police said, they discovered Denton had defecated and urinated in the driver seat.
Denton was lethargic, unsteady on her feet and performed poorly on field sobriety tests, the report said. She refused to submit to a blood alcohol test and was arrested. While being transported to jail, Denton urinated on herself again in the back of the patrol car, the report said.
Once at the jail, officers learned Denton had at least three previous DUIs. Two of those occurred in Tennessee, and were from 1997 and 1998, the report said. The other happened in Georgia in 1985.
After learning of her DUI history, officers obtained a search warrant to perform a mandatory blood draw. She was then taken to Blount Memorial Hospital for a blood test.
While there, she told officers that before they found her at the Citgo, she had been at a bar in downtown Maryville.
