The mother of a murdered 8-year-old Foothills Elementary School student has asked those wanting to send flowers instead to make a monetary donation to a local charity.
Organizers for Samaritan Hands, a faith-based charity that provides assistance around the world, posted a Facebook request Tuesday on behalf of Sam Houston Elementary School teacher Miranda Reagan.
Funds will benefit Escuela Padre Juan Jose Zugarramurdi ll de El Vinedo in Caracas, Venezuela.
Reagan had assisted with raising donations for the school, according to her Facebook profile.
Her son died of gunshot wounds Monday at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
Her husband, James Reagan, is believed to have shot the boy before killing himself, according to Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp.
A property inspector alerted dispatchers Monday after noticing smoke coming from the back of the home at 9:26 a.m.
James Reagan was pronounced dead shortly afterward at Blount Memorial Hospital.
Crisp said autopsies were completed Tuesday, but results aren’t expected for about a week.
