An accident on Alcoa Highway involving several vehicles and downed power poles just south of the intersection with Pellissippi Parkway brought traffic to a crawl Wednesday afternoon.

A Budget box truck pulled out in front of a pickup at approximately 4 p.m. and the pickup truck struck the side of the box car near the Twin City GMC Dealership, said James Sparks, Alcoa Police Department lieutenant. The wreck caused a chain reaction, and the damaged vehicles slid into at least one of the cars for sale.

Sparks added a construction paint-striping truck also was struck and painting equipment was thrown from the vehicle, but the mess was relegated to the highway’s shoulder.

Several power lines were down. The downed line caused a power outage, and the Alcoa Police Department building lacked electricity Wednesday afternoon.

A motorist sustained minor injuries from the incident.

The southbound lane of traffic was still open. Northbound highway traffic was directed through one lane of the highway, and motorists were moving slowly.

Alcoa Electric crews were on-site fixing equipment and replacing a power pole.
