SUMMER ON BROADWAY: Cooper Jones and Buckeye

Cooper Jones and his dog Buckeye compete in the Smoky Mountain Dock Dog Big Air event at the 2018 Summer on Broadway in Maryville.

The peaceful backdrop is the Great Smoky Mountains, but the action will be in downtown when Summer on Broadway returns to Maryville June 21-22.

Festival organizers have assembled activities designed to give everyone something to enjoy whether they be foodies, car fanatics and beer or music lovers. The event has drawn in attendees from all over the Southeast and connects the community and out-of-town attendees to experience downtown Maryville alive with festivities.

“Summer on Broadway is a rapidly growing, anticipated annual event that showcases and supports the best of the region,” Blount Partnership Director of Tourism Kim Mitchell said in a news release. “It’s a weekend full of pure fun where everyone can kick back, come together and let loose to celebrate the start of the summer season.”

On Friday, June 21, the festival begins at 2 p.m. on Broadway Avenue. Festival admission and parking is free. On Saturday, June 22, start time is 9 a.m.

There will be food trucks as well as craft vendors. The Kids Area will feature face painting, Eurobungy, Hungry Hippo Chow Down, a trackless train, a rock wall and the Knoxville Game Truck. Friday Night Lights will be held in conjunction with the festival. Classic cars will parade down Broadway, the Napa Auto Fest Car Show will be held in the Blount County Courthouse parking lot and the Napa Pinewood Derby at the theater in Greenbelt Park.

The newly refurbished municipal parking deck by Barley’s will be the entertainment venue for The Cleverlys to share their music and comedy. The New York Times characterized the group: “If Earl Scruggs, Dolly Parton, and Spinal Tap spawned a litter of puppies, it would be The Cleverlys.”

Smoky Mountain Dock Dogs Big Air will be back with several competitions leading to the finals where the long-jumping, water-loving canines will exhibit their best splash forms.

The Friday Night Movie on Broadway will feature “Spider-Man.” The Big BBQ Bash awards presentation will be on Saturday as will the Hops in the Hills Craft Beer Festival that keeps growing in popularity.

Among the sponsors noted by the Blount Partnership are the Knoxville TVA Credit Union, Craig Sutter with State Farm and Pinnacle Home Improvement. For more information about Summer on Broadway, visit SummeronBroadway.net.
