A Maryville woman who was trying to cross East Lamar Alexander Parkway Wednesday night was taken to the hospital after she was struck by a vehicle.

Virginia Sands, 69, Walker School Road, was taken by ambulance to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with apparent serious injury, according to a Maryville Police Department report.

Cody M. Suttles, 25, Charles Young Road, Walland, was driving a Chevrolet station wagon eastbound on East Lamar Alexander Parkway when his vehicle struck Sands as she was crossing from the Blount Memorial Hospital side of the street to the Blount County Justice Center side, the report said.

The crash happened at around 7:45 p.m.

A “no crossing” sign was displayed at the time of the crash, meaning Sands disregarded the signal, police said.

Suttles and his two passengers were not injured.

Staff at UT Medical Center said Thursday that Sands was listed as a patient, but a condition was not available.

Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor. No citations were issued.
