I have long been a supporter of Blount County Schools. However, I am extremely disappointed with Director Rob Britt's recommendation to spend $1 million to renovate field houses at Heritage and William Blount high schools at the expense of updating science labs, especially at Heritage, where previous Daily Times stories have reported that the science labs are ill equipped and non-functioning.
Britt mentioned that the BCS Athletic Committee recommended the field house improvements. Perhaps we need an Education Committee to recommend academic improvements that I have always believed were the function of the education system. I urge county commissioners to focus on academic improvements first.
