A rough back nine has Alcoa senior golfer Braedon Wear in less-than-ideal position after the first round of the Small Class State Tournament in Manchester.
Wear fired a 4-over 76 on Monday at WillowBrook Golf Club. He is tied for eighth place and sits five shots back of the co-leaders.
Signal Mountain’s Foster Wood and Waverly’s Cayden Chambers shot 71 to share the top of the leaderboard. The final round will be played Wednesday.
Wear, the reigning state champion, began Tuesday’s round in great fashion with a birdie on the opening hole. He played clean throughout the front nine and added a birdie on the par-five seventh hole to make the turn at 2-under 34.
His round derailed quickly after that with bogeys on the next four holes. He also made bogeys on Nos. 16 and 18 to finish the back nine at 6-over 42.
Alcoa’s Bryce Barber shot 87 on Tuesday and is tied for 38th out of 64 players.
Kingston, the team that defeated Alcoa at the Region 2 Tournament to claim the state qualifying berth, is in second place after the first round. The Yellowjackets shot 328 and are 31 shots behind Signal Mountain, which defeated Alcoa by three shots to win last year’s team state championship.
Greenback’s June Greene is also in action at WillowBrook. She shot 21-over 93 Tuesday and sits in a tie for 24th place out of 43 players. The first-round leader shot 72.
