Maryville College Fighting Scots 41, Berry College Vikings 14

Honaker Field at Lloyd L. Thornton Stadium, Maryville

Berry    7    0   7    0     — 14

SCOTS  14 10   7  10     — 41

FIRST QUARTER

10:55 SCOTS — Evan Pittenger 4 run (Wesley Bloeme kick)

11 plays | 65 yds | 3:57

The Scots picked up first downs on their first two plays of the season as Maurice Walker took a screen 10 yards and Deshjion Whitlock picked up 14 on his first carry as the starting back. Whitlock helped convert 4th-and-5 going right as Pittenger rolled left drawing the Berry defenders the wrong way on a 10-yard gain. When MC ran out of room to maneuver, Pittenger followed Clan McRader Left on a sweep to the scoreboard to cap the season opening drive with a score under the pine trees. | SCOTS, 7-0

9:51 SCOTS — Walker 13 pass from Pittenger (Bloeme kick)

4 plays | 24 yds |:45

Rueben Rodgers reached back and took the ball out of the air one-handed for an interception on Berry’s second offensive play. Trenton Shuler took MC to the 13 on two carries before Walker made a diving grab of a low pass by the Ambulance Gate as the Scots put up 14 points in 64 seconds. | SCOTS, 14-0

4:26 BC — Chris Lilly 32 pass from Dale Jackson (Campbell Harrison kick)

9 plays | 85 yds | 5:21

Maryville was its own worst enemy, giving the Vikings 20 yards on penalties including encroachment on fourth down with Berry in punt formation that gave the drive new life. Ruben Rodgers made up a step on Lilly but stumbled as the receiver out of Blackman High in Murfreesboro went up for the grab. | SCOTS, 14-7

SECOND QUARTER

7:38 SCOTS — Whitlock 75 run (Bloeme kick)

2 plays | 80 yds | :36

Kendyhl Rodgers completed the family theft package, picking off Dale Jackson in the end zone on a throw meant for Josh Bullock, then running it right to the 20. Whitlock popped off five on first down, then took off left into day light on second down to win a foot race to Miss Kim’s Concession Stand on the fourth longest scoring run in MC history. | SCOTS, 21-7

:00 — Bloeme 22 field goal

16 plays | 88 yds | 5:09

Bloeme delivered as the Scots took a page from the Maryville Rebel playbook and ran the last third of the quarter out, marching the length of the field for a score just before half. Whitlock, Shuler, Pittenger and Eddie Brock all took turns pounding behind a resurgent offensive front that ran out of time on the ground and Mc missed on the attempted fade. | SCOTS, 24-7

THIRD QUARTER

12:01 BC — Josh Bullock 25 pass from Jackson (Harrison kick)

7 plays | 74 yds | 2:54

Berry made its own luck to get back in business. With Jackson scrambling for his life for the third time on the drive, the sophomore heaved it toward the pines where Bullock came down with the big catch in a crowd of MC defenders. | SCOTS, 24-14

1:58 SCOTS — Pittenger 2 run (Bloeme kick)

4 plays | 6 yds | 1:58

Jayvon McCullough became the third different Scot to pick off Jackson, stepping in front of a screen to the right side and taking it 24 yards to almost reach the shadow of the Victory Hill tents. Three tries couldn’t get it across and anxious to not let the Vikings make a second goal-line stand, Pitt went Clan McRader Right and cut back inside the red and white wall of the sweep for the score. | SCOTS, 31-14

FOURTH QUARTER

7:41 SCOTS — Raekwon Neal 69 run (Bloeme kick)

3 plays | 80 yds | :57

The Scots forced a Berry punt after Jackson gave his breakfast to the Honaker grass as an offering on the snap and collapsed a play later. Freshman Stevorius Kimbell continued his memorable day on special teams with a pop-pop grab of the punt before securing and shifting into second gear to reach the 20. Neal ran for 6, then 5 and on first down popped out of a pile, stiff armed a linebacker and the Fort Worth, Texas freshman was off to the pines for his first collegiate touchdown. | SCOTS, 38-14

2:56 SCOTS — Bloeme 39 field goal

7 plays | 27 yds | 3:18

The second team offense drove to the red zone behind Nick Myers at quarterback and Brock in the backfield. Brock ripped off a 25-yarder and got half the distance tacked on after being slung down by Berry’s Preston Stewart, who took a stiff arm from the Texas sophomore on the carry. A sack backed MC out of TD range and Bloeme banged home his second 3-pointer. | SCOTS, 41-14
